Adopt a Dog. Change a Life — Theirs and Yours.
At The Love Pit, we know bully breeds. From American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers to American Bullies, American Bulldogs and all the mixes in between—we’re passionate about understanding each dog’s needs and potential. Our experienced team takes adoption matchmaking seriously, helping every adopter find the right fit for their lifestyle, home, and heart.

Why Adopt from TLP?
We don’t just rescue dogs — we prepare them for success.
Our balanced, relationship-based approach to training and our commitment to lifelong adoption support sets our adoption program apart from the rest.

Relationship-Based Matching
We focus on more than just behavior and energy — we prioritize relationship-based training and trust-building to truly understand each dog.

Foster-Based Foundation
Our dogs live in real homes with dedicated fosters who help them build confidence, routine, and trust. For those needing additional support, some stay at our modern, clean, and innovative facility — never in outside boarding facilities.

Saving Lives with Purpose
Saving Lives with Purpose
Every adoption helps break the cycle for bully breeds. You’re not just saving one life — you’re standing up for a misunderstood breed and joining a mission that matters.

"We adopted our Rhett from The Love Pit in June of 2022. The adoption process was smooth & the people we worked with were wonderful. We will 100% adopt from The Love Pit again & I always recommend them to everyone. My daughter wishes we lived closer so we could go volunteer."

FAQs
Adopting a dog is a big decision, and we’re here to help you feel confident every step of the way. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about our process, our dogs, and what to expect as a TLP adopter.
The great thing about bully breeds is their versatility—some are energetic and adventurous, while others are total low-key loungers. The key is finding the right personality for your daily routine, activity level, and experience. During the adoption process, we’ll get to know you and help match you with a dog whose needs and temperament align with your lifestyle. Whether you live alone, have a big family, live in an apartment, or have a big backyard, there’s likely a bully breed out there who’s the perfect fit.
That said, bully breeds thrive with structure, consistency, and confident leadership. They’re loyal, loving, and eager to please—but they also need guidance and boundaries to be their best selves. We’re here to support you every step of the way and help you decide if a bully breed is truly the right fit for your home and lifestyle.
Yes—many of our adoptive families have other pets! When you apply, we’ll ask about your current animals so we can better understand their personalities and find a dog that will be the best fit. We take great care in facilitating slow, structured introductions and will guide you through meet-and-greet steps to ensure a safe and successful transition.
Every dog is different, and while some thrive with other pets, others may prefer to be the only animal in the home. Our job is to help you find the best match for your pack—two-legged or four.
Yes! We welcome out-of-state adopters. If you’re applying from outside Texas, you’ll need to travel to our facility in Dallas to meet the dog you're interested in. Adopters are also responsible for arranging safe transportation home.
In some cases, we do allow same-day adoptions for out-of-state visitors—but this depends on the dog’s needs and our team’s assessment to ensure it’s the right fit. We’ll work closely with you to make the process as smooth as possible.
We get it—life happens. If you’re no longer able to care for your dog, we will always welcome them back into our program. Once a Love Pit dog, always a Love Pit dog.
We ask that you contact us first if you need to rehome or return your dog so we can ensure they come back safely. If you’re facing a tough situation but want to keep your dog, we’ll do everything we can to support you—with training resources, medical help, or even temporary boarding when possible.
To help us plan for a smooth transition, we ask for at least two weeks’ notice so we can secure a foster home or open a spot at our facility. Our commitment to our dogs—and to you—doesn’t end on adoption day.
The adoption fee covers spay or neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipping with lifetime registration, flea/tick and heartworm prevention, and any medical care your dog receives while in our program.
But it goes beyond medical care.
We nerd out on behavioral training and work closely with our fosters to prepare dogs for success in their future homes. Every dog learns what we call "Happy Home Habits"—crate training, potty training, and leash skills. Many of our fosters go above and beyond, teaching advanced skills like “place,” threshold manners, treadmill and bike running, muzzle training, and even environmental agility. Our dogs don’t just get ready for adoption—they get set up to thrive.
Yes! Many of our dogs do great in apartments or rentals. Some rental communities, landlords, and cities have rules that may limit the number, size, or type of dog you can have, including broad categories like Pit Bull-type dogs. Since many of our dogs fall into that category, we encourage adopters to take time to review any pet-related policies in place where they live.
We do not make housing decisions for adopters, but we do believe in setting everyone up for long-term success—so please make sure you're confident in your ability to welcome a dog home under your current housing terms.
In addition, some areas have laws known as Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL) that prohibit residents from owning certain dog breeds, typically based on appearance rather than behavior. These laws are often vague, outdated, and rooted in misinformation. At The Love Pit, we advocate against BSL and work to educate the public on responsible ownership and the true nature of bully breeds.

If you have questions or aren’t sure how local laws might apply, we’re happy to help point you in the right direction or provide additional resources.
